Quick Answer

ACCA Advanced Financial Management (AFM) is an optional Strategic Professional exam that tests investment appraisal, valuation, mergers, restructuring and treasury risk management. It is a three-hour 15-minute exam with a 50% pass mark. Recent global pass rates have stayed between 44% and 47%. Students can prepare through the ACCA AFM course at ICT Business School.

Introduction

If you are moving into the final stage of ACCA, AFM is likely on your shortlist. It is technical, it is case-based, and it is the paper that most directly prepares you to advise a board on money decisions.

At ICT Business School, we see the same questions from students across Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Is AFM too hard? Should I pick APM instead? What happens to my plan if ACCA changes the qualification in 2027?

This guide answers those questions in one place. It explains the Strategic Professional level, the exam structure, the syllabus and the pass rates. It also covers how to build on your Financial Management (FM) knowledge.

Key Takeaways

  • AFM is one of four Strategic Professional Options. Students complete two Essentials exams and any two Options exams under the current structure.
  • The exam is 100 marks: 80 technical marks and 20 professional skills marks.
  • There are no syllabus changes for September 2026 to June 2027.
  • Every AFM exam focuses on syllabus sections B (advanced investment appraisal) and E (treasury and risk management). Study these first.
  • June 2027 is the last sitting under the current structure. Check ACCA's Transition Tool before you plan.
  • Pass rates are below 50%. Most lost marks come from weak application to the scenario, not from missing formulas.

What Is ACCA Advanced Financial Management (AFM)?

ACCA Advanced Financial Management (AFM) is a Strategic Professional Options exam that trains you to advise senior management on financial decisions. ACCA describes the aim as applying knowledge and professional judgement like a senior financial executive or advisor, in private and public sectors. It builds directly on FM.

Think of FM as learning to drive. AFM is being the person who tells the company which route to take, whether to buy the fleet, and how to insure against fuel-price swings.

The syllabus covers the role of the senior financial adviser, advanced investment appraisal, acquisitions and mergers, corporate reconstruction, and treasury and advanced risk management. It also covers professional skills and technology skills.

Should I Choose AFM as My ACCA Option Paper?

Choose AFM if your career points towards corporate finance, treasury, mergers and acquisitions, investment analysis or a future CFO role. Choose another Option if your work sits in management accounting, tax or audit. The paper you enjoy and use at work is the one you are most likely to pass.

Your career directionBest-fit OptionUnderpinning Applied Skills paper

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. Do I enjoy valuation, risk and numbers-plus-judgement questions?
  2. Did I do well in FM, or can I revise it quickly?
  3. Will my next job use these skills?

If you answered yes to two of three, AFM is a strong candidate. Our ACCA vs CA vs CMA comparison can help if you are still comparing whole qualifications.

ACCA AFM Exam Format and Marks Distribution

The AFM exam lasts 3 hours 15 minutes, carries 100 marks and is computer-based. The pass mark for all ACCA Qualification exams is 50%. All questions are compulsory, and the Options exams use tools such as a word processor, spreadsheets and presentation slides.

DeliveryComputer-based exam (CBE)
Total marks100 (80 technical + 20 professional skills)

Syllabus focusEvery exam has questions focused on sections B and E

Section A is always a single 50-mark case study, made up of 40 technical marks and 10 professional skills marks. Section B has two compulsory 25-mark questions, each with 20 technical and 5 professional skills marks. There are no wholly narrative questions in Section B.

*Our own guideline: 195 minutes ÷ 100 marks ≈ 1.95 minutes per mark. ACCA does not set a time per section.

The four professional skills

The professional skills are communication, analysis and evaluation, scepticism and commercial acumen. In practice, they reward answers that tie each point back to the scenario. A generic paragraph that could sit in any AFM answer earns very little.

How to lay out your CBE answer

Put numbers in the spreadsheet and your written analysis in the word processor. ACCA's March/June 2025 examiner's report flagged candidates presenting discussion in the spreadsheet response area, amongst the calculations, instead of in the word processor. Keep calculations tidy and label them clearly. Then write recommendations in the format the requirement asks for, such as a report to the Board.

ACCA AFM Syllabus 2026–27: What Is Examined?

The AFM syllabus has five technical areas (A–E), plus professional skills (F) and employability and technology skills (G). ACCA lists no changes to the syllabus for September 2026 to June 2027. ACCA does not publish weightings, but every exam has questions focused on sections B and E.

AreaWhat it coversWhat examiners look for
A Role of the senior financial adviserFinancial strategy, ESG and ethics, international trade and finance, dividend policy, transfer pricingRecommendations that balance stakeholders
B Advanced investment appraisalNPV, IRR/MIRR, option pricing, real options, cost of capital, APV, valuation with free cash flows, international investmentCorrect models, clear assumptions, sensible conclusions
C Acquisitions and mergersGrowth strategy, target selection, synergies, valuation, regulation, offer financingValue creation, risk and the acquirer's position
D Corporate reconstructionFinancial reconstruction, unbundling, management buy-outs and buy-insWhether a strategy is appropriate and how capital markets react
E Treasury and risk managementForex and interest rate hedging, derivatives, the treasury functionThe right hedge for the exposure, with reasons
F/G Professional and technology skillsCommunication, scepticism, commercial acumen, CBE toolsApplication to the scenario and clean presentation

Advanced investment appraisal (section B)

Section B expects NPV modelling with inflation, taxation and capital rationing, plus discussion of NPV versus IRR. It also covers the Black-Scholes model, real options such as the options to delay, expand and withdraw, and the adjusted present value (APV) technique.

Worked example: why APV exists. A project costs $10m. The present value of its all-equity cash flows is $11.2m, so the base-case NPV is $1.2m. The company funds it with $4m of permanent debt at a 25% tax rate. The debt tax shield is worth 25% × $4m = $1.0m. Issue costs are $0.2m.

APV = $1.2m + $1.0m − $0.2m = $2.0m

APV works better than a single blended discount rate when the financing itself changes the project's value.

Financing and cost of capital

The syllabus includes Islamic finance, green finance, security token offerings, duration and convexity, credit spreads, and the Modigliani and Miller propositions. Islamic finance is examinable, which is useful for students in Pakistan who already see it in banking.

Acquisitions, restructuring and valuation

Students value targets with asset-based, income-based and cash-flow-based models, assess revenue, cost and financial synergies, and evaluate ways to obtain a listing such as SPACs and reverse takeovers. Section D then asks whether a financial reconstruction or unbundling makes sense.

Treasury and derivatives (section E)

Match the hedge to the exposure. For forex, you choose between forwards, money market hedges, futures, currency swaps and currency options. For interest rates, the choices are FRAs, futures, swaps and options including collars.

ToolTypeKey featureWatch out for
Forward contractOTCFixes the rate for a future dateAn obligation, so you lose any favourable move
Money market hedgeSyntheticUses borrowing and deposit ratesNeeds correct rates and timing
FuturesExchange-tradedStandard contracts, marginBasis risk and contract-size mismatch
OptionsOTC or exchangeRight, not obligationThe premium is a real cost
SwapsOTCSuits longer-term exposureCounterparty and credit considerations

Money market hedge for a foreign-currency receipt (numbered steps):

  1. Borrow the present value of the foreign-currency receipt today (receipt ÷ (1 + borrowing rate × time)).
  2. Convert the borrowed amount into your home currency at the spot rate.
  3. Deposit the home currency at the deposit rate (or use it to reduce an overdraft).
  4. When the customer pays, use the receipt to repay the foreign-currency loan.
  5. Compare the home-currency outcome with the forward rate.

For Pakistani importers and exporters, this logic maps to real PKR/USD exposure. The instruments available locally differ from the textbook, so treat AFM as the theory and ask your bank about local practice.

How Hard Is ACCA AFM? Pass Rates Explained

AFM is technically demanding, and fewer than half of candidates pass in a typical sitting. ACCA publishes AFM pass rates of 46% (June 2025), 44% (September 2025), 45% (December 2025), 44% (March 2026) and 47% (June 2026).

SittingGlobal pass rate
June 202546%
September 202544%
December 202545%
March 202644%
June 202647%

These are global figures, not results for Pakistan or any single institute. For batch-level results at ICT Business School, ask our admissions team.

Difficulty comes from three things: long scenarios, calculations that must be explained, and 20 professional skills marks. If you did well in FM, you have the right base. If FM feels rusty, revise it first.

Warning: Treat any site quoting a very different AFM pass rate with caution unless it cites ACCA. Check ACCA's AFM page for the latest figures.

Why Do Students Fail AFM? Common Mistakes and Fixes

Most students lose marks by not applying their knowledge to the scenario. A summary of ACCA's March/June 2026 examiner's report highlights failing to turn scenario facts into analysis, plus difficulty with futures hedging and valuation calculations. Our guide on why students fail ACCA and CA exams covers the wider habits behind this.

Common mistakeWhy it costs marksFix
Mixing analysis into the spreadsheetMarkers look for discussion in the word processorNumbers in the spreadsheet, prose in the word processor
Including sunk costs (e.g. R&D already spent)Sunk costs are not relevant cash flowsInclude only incremental future cash flows

ACCA-focused tuition providers report that the sunk cost, cash flow and interest errors appear across recent examiner reports. Read the examiner's reports on ACCA's site before every sitting.

How to Prepare for ACCA AFM: Study Plan, Revision and Mock Exams

A practical plan is 10–14 weeks for one sitting, if your FM knowledge is fresh. This is a planning suggestion, not an ACCA requirement: ACCA does not prescribe or recommend a number of learning hours.

Start with sections B and E, because every exam has questions focused on them.

ACCA AFM Eligibility and How to Enter the Exam

You must finish Applied Skills before sitting Strategic Professional exams, or sit your final Applied Skills exam in the same session as your first Strategic Professional exam. FM is the underpinning paper: ACCA says AFM is directly underpinned by Financial Management.

Step-by-step entry:

  1. Register with ACCA (or confirm your student record).
  2. Complete or be exempted from Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills. Use our ACCA exemption calculator guide and ACCA eligibility criteria in Pakistan.
  3. Complete the Ethics and Professional Skills Module (EPSM). ACCA states that students who complete EPSM before Strategic Professional exams have a 25% better success rate.
  4. Choose your session and enter through myACCA before the deadline.
  5. Confirm your exam mode and center on ACCA's site.
  6. Practice in the CBE environment, then sit the exam.

Not sure where you stand? Our admission team can review your record.

How Much Does the ACCA AFM Exam Cost?

ACCA sets exam fees by location and entry deadline, so always check the current Pakistan fee page. ACCA's Pakistan fees page lists current amounts. The December 2026 standard entry deadline for AFM is 2 November 2026 at 23:59 GMT.

Budget for all of these:

  • Exam entry fee (early or standard, not late)
  • ACCA annual subscription
  • Tuition and revision courses
  • Study materials
  • A resit, in case you need one

Late entry costs more, and a failed paper means paying the entry fee again. For local budgeting, see ACCA fees in Pakistan and the total cost of ACCA in Pakistan 2026.

AFM Exam Dates and the 2027 ACCA Changes

June 2027 is the last sitting of AFM under the current Strategic Professional structure. ACCA's timeline shows the first sitting of the redesigned Expertise and Strategic Professional exams in September 2027.

The September 2026 sitting ran from 7 to 11 September, and December 2026 is scheduled for 7 to 11 December. Always confirm dates on ACCA's timetable, and see our ACCA exam dates and deadlines page.

ACCA AFM Career Scope and Salary

AFM is most useful for careers in corporate finance, treasury, mergers and acquisitions, investment analysis and CFO-track roles. It also supports FP&A, financial advisory and Islamic finance work. Full ACCA membership also requires practical experience. AFM alone does not guarantee a job.

Typical roles that use AFM skills:

  • Corporate finance analyst
  • Treasury analyst or manager
  • M&A and transaction advisory associate
  • Investment or equity analyst
  • Financial controller heading towards finance director

Salaries vary by employer, city, experience and sector. Any figure quoted without a source should be treated with care. For Pakistan salary ranges, use ACCA salary in Pakistan and ACCA scope in Pakistan.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is ACCA AFM in simple words?

ACCA AFM (Advanced Financial Management) is a Strategic Professional Options exam that teaches you to advise senior management on investment, financing, valuation, mergers, restructuring and risk decisions. It builds on the Financial Management (FM) paper and tests judgement as much as calculation.

2. How many marks and how much time does the ACCA AFM exam have?

The exam lasts 3 hours 15 minutes and carries 100 marks, including 80 technical and 20 professional skills marks. Section A is one 50-mark case study. Section B has two compulsory 25-mark questions. All questions are compulsory, and the pass mark is 50%.

3. What is the ACCA AFM pass rate?

ACCA's published global pass rate for AFM ranged from 44% to 47% across the last five sittings, from June 2025 to June 2026. It was 47% in June 2026. These are global figures, not results for any single institute or country.

4. Is ACCA AFM harder than Financial Management (FM)?

Yes, AFM is a clear step up from FM. It uses longer case-based scenarios, expects you to justify recommendations, and awards 20 marks for professional skills. FM knowledge, such as WACC, CAPM and basic hedging, is the foundation you need before starting.

5. How long should I study for ACCA AFM?

A practical plan is 10 to 14 weeks for one sitting, assuming your FM knowledge is fresh. ACCA does not prescribe study hours. Allow longer if you work full-time or need to revise WACC, CAPM and hedging basics before starting the advanced topics.

6. Is ACCA AFM worth it in Pakistan? (ACCA AFM scope Pakistan mein)

AFM suits careers in corporate finance, treasury, mergers and acquisitions, and investment analysis. Its syllabus includes Islamic finance and foreign exchange risk, which are relevant to Pakistan. It does not guarantee a job or salary, so pair it with practical experience.

7. Can I still sit ACCA AFM after the 2027 changes?

You can sit AFM until the June 2027 session. ACCA's redesigned Strategic Professional exams start in September 2027, and learning providers report AFM's successor as the SCF Corporate Finance Professional Option. ACCA says eligible passes convert into credit, so check its Transition Tool for your position.

8. Where can I study ACCA AFM in Islamabad or Rawalpindi?

ICT Business School offers ACCA Advanced Financial Management (AFM) preparation for students in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and the twin cities. You can view the course page, check the schedule and book a seat through the Contact page.

Conclusion

Summary: ACCA AFM is a 100-mark, computer-based Strategic Professional Option that tests advanced investment appraisal, valuation, M&A, restructuring and risk management. Pass rates have stayed in the mid-40s, so preparation quality matters. The 2027 redesign makes timing a real planning factor.

Key recommendation: Choose AFM if your career points to corporate finance or treasury. Start with sections B and E. Practise every question in the same CBE tools you will use on exam day.

Next step: Check your ACCA record against the Transition Tool, then choose a session before the 2 November 2026 standard-entry deadline for December.
